The Colosseum is one of the most famous monuments in Rome. It is was opened in 80 A.D to host gladiator fights. Spectators came to witness fights between gladiators as well as animal fights. The Colosseum had eighty doors, and it was just over 160 feet high and could hold up to a capacity of 50 000 spectators. Just after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum was abandoned for centuries until it was used as a fortress in the Medieval times. Over the years, the Colosseum has suffered lots of damage from earth - quakes and weather erosion. Today the Colosseum can still be visited by tourist, while it is slowly being restored.
