Brussels Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The Royal Square was built on the ruins of the castle built in the 11th century for the Duke of Brabant and because the site has been excavated one can still see the underground digs and Aula Magna, the main hall, which was meant for the meetings of the Council of Brabant and other merriment. Here, in 1519, Charles V was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. In the middle of the square there a statue of Godfry of Bouillon, leader of the first crusade on 1096 and King of Jerusalem, and in the corner are the buildings of the Museum of Ancient Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
