The Parthenon in Athens now standing in ruins at the top of the Acropolis was built to accommodate the mighty forty-foot high statue of the Goddess Athena, patron of the polis of Athens. The Parthenon is considered the most perfect example of Doric temples ever created. An interesting fact about this pagan temple is that it was converted into a Christian church in the late sixth century, and then served a term from about 1204 until 1458 ass a Latin church, until the Turkish conquerors converted it to a mosque.
